In December 2011, an ESE Special Interest Group (SIG) was established with the aim to improve the knowledge and understanding of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) across Europe; a survey was conducted to understand the clinical practice and knowledge across Europe. Combining the results of the survey, together with a comprehensive literature study, the SIG created an ESE Position Statement on diagnosis and management of PCOS published in the European Journal of Endocrinology in 2014 (attached below).
Given the increased incidence of PCOS among women of reproductive age and the everchanging clinical and metabolic/hormonal findings, as well as the novelties and the fast-growing new evidence in the field, ESE has re-established this Special Interest Group with the aim of providing an update on the needs of caring physicians and to clarify several areas of uncertainty regarding the diagnosis and management of women with PCOS.
ESE conducted a new electronic research survey among its members on the everyday practice in the diagnosis and management of women with PCOS. Data collected in this study, together with updated information obtained from an extensive literature review, will allow the SIG to provide an updated ESE Position Statement on therapeutic approach in PCOS, ultimately benefiting all physicians who will treat women with PCOS in the future.
