New research shows that Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents may be genetically distinct
A recent study published in Nature Metabolism challenges thinking about early-onset Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Researchers analysed exome sequences and common variant associations for 12,000 individuals including more than 3,000 children and adolescents with youth-onset T2D, alongside a control group matched for ancestry. Results showed 21.2% of patients had a causal gene that increased the risk of diabetes by more than threefold.
