Global endocrine community comes together to comment on technical discussions taking place towards the REACH revision

Today (25 April 2025) the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), the Endocrine Society and the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) have submitted a statement to CARACAL - Competent Authorities on REACH and CLP Implementation. This statement follows a meeting on 03 April 2025 where the European Commission presented its perspectives on the REACH revision to , incorporating the views of the Member States. Our collective comments focus on the provisions most relevant to the control of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).

Well-established, peer-reviewed research by members of our Societies and others has linked EDCs with significant developmentally programmed or acute health problems such as infertility, cancer, diabetes and obesity. Human biomonitoring studies in the EU have revealed significant contamination of EU citizens by EDCs and other hazardous chemicals. The importance of good hormone health was highlighted yesterday (24 April) with a global awareness campaign for World Hormone Day 2025 and legislation to protect the health and well-being of all must continue to be supported.

As explained in more detailed in our Statement (read it here), we support the introduction of a Mixture Assessment Factor, the wider application of the Generic Risk Management Approach to EDCs in Category 2 in line with the revised Regulation for Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP Regulation) and the promotion of data sharing to minimise animal testing.

The three Societies will actively work together to continue to inform the debate within CARACAL in the months to come and help lay the foundation for an ambitious REACH revision that will effectively address the health and environment hazards caused by EDCs.
