ESE Past President AJ van der Lely Knighted!
We are delighted to hear that ESE Past President (2015-2019) Emeritus Professor Aart Jan (AJ) van der Lely has been awarded a Royal Decoration on Friday, 14 March 2025.
He was promoted to ‘Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion’. Deputy Mayor Jules Bijl of his hometown Lansingerland awarded him this distinction during the Pituitary Symposium of the Erasmus MC Pituitary Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in front of colleagues as well as family and friends.
AJ van der Lely, who retired in June 2024, received the award for his relentless dedication to patients with pituitary disorders as well as advancing the field of endocrinology.
Deputy Mayor Jules Bijl said, “His creativity and bringing the right people together at the right time have led to important scientific breakthroughs. This is evidenced by his many publications in top scientific journals and his prestigious international awards.'
His studies have been instrumental in applying new treatments to patients, Bijl mentioned. 'He was the first doctor to apply the drug pegvisomant in patients with acromegaly. He has thus been of great significance in improving the daily lives of thousands of patients around the world.'
ESE President Jérôme Bertherat said, “We are proud to see AJ, a much-respected researcher and friend to many in the field of endocrinology, being recognised for his huge contribution to our discipline and congratulate him on receiving this prestigious Royal Decoration."
