Adrenal and Cardiovascular

Symposium 6 - New applications of Steroid Hormones

“Hypertension is an increasingly important disease worldwide – an astonishing part of it is related to adrenal hormone dysfunction.

Diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of adrenal diseases can save lives by avoiding cardiovascular complications and reduce cardiovascular mortality in these patients”

Barbara Obermayer-Pietsch - Programme Focus Area Representative, Adrenal and Cardiovascular

Plenary 1 – Hypoxia

“Impairment of hypoxia-signaling is associated with the development of pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas (PPGLs) and many other solid tumors.

This session will provide a unique opportunity to learn first-hand from the Nobel Prize laureate Peter Ratcliffe, whose work has shaped much of the current understanding of hypoxia.”

Tomaz Kocjan – Programme Focus Area Representative, Adrenal and Cardiovascular

Symposium 17 - Advances in the management of adrenocortical carcinoma

"Adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare cancer with dismal prognosis in its advanced stages. This session will present novel findings that might extend our therapeutic repertoire."

Peter Igaz - Programme Focus Area Representative, Adrenal and Cardiovascular

Calcium and Bone

Symposium 10 - Bone and muscle vitamin replacement

“While vitamin D is centrally important in bone and muscle physiology and disease, there remains healthy debate and controversy around classical and non-classical actions of vitamin D and wider benefits of vitamin D supplementation. Furthermore, there is growing interest, but some conflicting data, on vitamin K and its actions in bone and muscle.

This session promises to provide fascinating insights, from world authorities, into the importance of supplementation of vitamin D and vitamin K with a particular focus on bone and muscle.”

Neil Gittoes - Programme Focus Area Representative, Calcium and Bone

Diabetes, Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition

Symposium 11 - Recent studies that changed my practice

"Several recent discoveries have offered clinical opportunities to improve the quality of clinical practice in endocrinology.

This session is expected to highlight the most relevant ones in the fields of thyroid, adrenal gland, pituitary and neuroendocrinology, presented by highly qualified scientists."

Ferruccio Santini - Programme Focus Area Representative, Diabetes, Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition

Endocrine-related Cancer

Symposium 8 - Novel pathological aspects of adipose tissue

“Adipose tissue is a multifaceted organ with pathophysiological roles in different endocrine and metabolic processes.

This session will shed light on the emerging importance of adipose tissue in pathological conditions beyond its traditional role as an energy storage site, proposing new avenues for research and potential therapeutic targets in the treatment of various malignancies.”

Manuel D. Gahete - Programme Focus Area Representative, Endocrine-related Cancer

Symposium 12 - Senescence-mediated signalling in the pathogenesis of endocrine-related cancer: Pathogenesis and novel therapeutic opportunities

“Senescent cells are present in many human cancers, including endocrine neoplasias. They secrete factors that can promote  tumour growth and metastasis. Drugs targeting senescent cells have been identified and proven to be relevant in preclinical cancer models.

This session will focus on our understanding of senescence in endocrine tumours and how new therapies can be exploited for the benefit of the patients.”

Juan Pedro Martinez-Barbera - Programme Focus Area Representative, Endocrine-related Cancer

Environmental Endocrinology

Plenary 3 - The Silent Decline: Unlocking the Enigma of Dropping Sperm Counts and Fertility Rates

Symposium 14 - Endocrine disruption - from bench to bedside

“Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and their role in human health has come to the forefront of public and academic discussion. Hence, I am particularly looking forward to the plenary lecture The Silent Decline: Unlocking the Enigma of Dropping Sperm Counts and Fertility Rates, as it promises to delve into the critical issues surrounding reproductive health and its implications for future generations.

Additionally, the Symposium Endocrine Disruption - from bench to bedside is of great interest to me, as it offers valuable insights into the impact of EDCs on human health, ranging from thyroid function and brain development to the outcomes of fertility treatments.”

Aleksandra Buha Đorđević - Programme Focus Area Representative, Environmental Endocrinology

Symposium 14 - Endocrine disruption - from bench to bedside

"Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals likely has widespread effects on the endocrine system and related adverse outcomes. Proving and quantifying these effects is difficult and requires a combined experimental, clinical and epidemiological approach. This session takes such a broad approach, highlighting the thyroid system, fertility outcomes and brain stem cell programming."

Tim Korevaar - Programme Focus Area Representative, Environmental Endocrinology

Pituitary and Neuroendocrinology

Symposium 1 - Craniopharyngioma: Pathogenesis and novel targeted treatments

“Craniopharyngioma is one of the most challenging tumours to manage. In this session the pathogenesis of hypothalamic damage and its clinical consequences will be highlighted.

In addition, exciting novel treatments targeting craniopharyngiomas will be presented. A symposium not to be missed by pediatric and adult endocrinologists.”

Pia Burman - Programme Focus Area Representative, Pituitary and Neuroendocrinology

Symposium 5 - Emerging aspects of menopause

“This exciting session will cover the discovery science which identified the NK3R as the mediator of menopausal flushing.

This will be followed by a talk summarising the data from clinical trials in post-menopausal women, which have led to the first NK3R antagonist being now translated into a licensed new non-oestrogen based therapy for menopausal flushing – this will be practice changing for our patients who cannot take HRT for their menopausal flushing.”

Waljit S Dhillo - Programme Focus Area Representative, Pituitary and Neuroendocrinology

Reproductive & Developmental Endocrinology

Symposium 5 - Emerging aspects of menopause

“Menopausal transition is a condition linked to many myths; however, some women experience stress and anxiety. The pros and cons regarding HRT need debate; furthermore, new drugs may alleviate symptoms such as hot flushes.”

Marianne Skovsager Andersen - Programme Focus Area Representative, Reproductive & Developmental Endocrinology

Thyroid

Symposium 11 – Recent studies that changed my practice

“The ultimate goal of research is to help the patient. The road to breakthrough discoveries is long and relies on the contributions of many people to advance the frontier of knowledge. This symposium highlights recent studies that have benefited patients.”

Helena Filipsson Nyström - Programme Focus Area Representative, Thyroid

Symposium 2: Thyroid hormones and development

“The impact of thyroid hormones on human development is a fascinating, yet still underexplored area. World class experts (Edward Visser, Ryann Fame, and Mirian Romitti) will talk about novel treatments of patients suffering from thyroid hormone transporter deficiency, diurnal control of brain states, as well as in-vitro approaches that facilitate understanding of thyroid development.”

Agnieszka Piekiełko-Witkowska - Programme Focus Area Representative, Thyroid

Symposium 14: Endocrine disruption - from bench to bedside

“Environmental pollution as a fact. How this impacts human health and in particular the endocrine system, is still very much a mystery. This symposium is a must for all interested in our future!”

Agnieszka Piekiełko-Witkowska - Programme Focus Area Representative, Thyroid
